Turn off or on Cloud Protection in Windows 10

Microsoft Defender Antivirus cloud protection can help to prevent your computer from malware attack. By default, cloud protection is turned on. But if it is disabled by the administrator, it is easy to enable it. Now in this article, you can learn several ways to turn off/on cloud protection for Microsoft Defender Antivirus in Windows 10. All these methods can also apply to Windows 11 computer.

Tips: Only the administrator can enable or disabled the cloud-delivered protection in Microsoft Defender Antivirus.

Way 1: Turn on/off Cloud Protection in Windows Security utility

Step 1: On Windows search box, enter Windows Security and then choose to open Windows Security app.

Step 2: Click Virus & threat protection on the left menu. Then hit on Manage settings under Virus &threat protection settings on the right panel.

Step 3: Scroll down and you can see the Cloud-delivered protection and Automatic sample submission options. Generally, they are enabled by default.

If you want to turn off Cloud-delivered protection, just switch the button to grey. It is the same to Automatic sample submission.

Tips: If the settings are greyed out and cannot enable, the automatic sample submission and Configure local settings override for reporting Microsoft MAPS have been configured to disabled in Group Policy. You need to change the settings to turn on it. Or you can directly go to Way 3 to manage the cloud protection option.

Way 2: Enable or Disable Cloud Protection with PowerShell

Note: All the commands can take effect in the situation that you have only Windows Defender Antivirus software on your computer. If there are other third-party antivirus programs on your computer, it would fail to work.

Step 1: Open Windows PowerShell as administrator.

Step 2: To turn on cloud protection, you can execute the command lines:

Set-MpPreference -MAPSReporting Advanced
Set-MpPreference -SubmitSamplesConsent SendAllSamples

To turn off cloud protection, you should run the following command lines:

Set-MpPreference -MAPSReporting Disabled
Set-MpPreference -SubmitSamplesConsent NeverSend

Way 3: Use Group Policy to Manage Cloud Protection

Step 1: Open Group Policy Editor.

Step 2: Click Computer configuration > Administrative templates >Windows components > Microsoft Defender Antivirus > MAPS.

Step 3: In the right panel of MAPS, double –click Join Microsoft MAPS setting.

Step 4: To turn on cloud protection, select Not configured and then the Apply>OK button. Then close the editor.

Tips: This is the default setting to allow using Way 1 and Way 2.

To turn off cloud protection, select Enabled option and then set Join Microsoft MAPS to Disabled under Options. After that, you can hit on Apply >OK button. Finally, you can shut down the Local Group Policy Editor.
