Change Folder Permissions | How-to Tutorial

Most of time, many computer users set folder permissions on the computer to protect the significant content in the folders. Yet few of them know how to change the folder permissions when it is necessary. Thus, this article will illustrate the how-to tutorial of changing folder permissions on Windows 8/8.1 computer.

Method 1: Change folder permissions in Properties.

Step 1: Open the Properties window.

Right click the folder and select Properties in the menu, as exhibited in the following picture.

Step 2: Enter Security and prepare to change permissions.

In the Properties window of the folder, select Security on the top and click Edit to continue.

Step 3: Make changes to the folder permissions.

As the Permissions window emerges, choose the user or group which the folder permissions are appointed to in the list, change the permissions in the Allow and Deny lines, and then click OK.

Method 2: Change folder permissions in Advanced Security.

Step 1: Select the folder (or open it), click Share on the menu bar and choose Advanced security to open Advanced Security Settings, as the following photo shows.

Step 2: When the Advanced Security Settings window opens, click Change permissions.

Step 3: Choose Add to move to the next step.

Step 4: Click Select a principal in the Permission Entry interface, referring to the screenshot below.

Step 5: In the Select User or Group window, enter the user or group name and then click OK.

Step 6: As the following interface turns up, change the permissions in the basic permissions. After that, tap OK to finish the changes.

Besides, in the sixth step, you are able to do two more things. They are:

1. Change the type of permissions.

In the Permission Entry window, click the down arrow beside Type and select a type from Allow or Deny.

2. Alter the application scope of permissions.

In the same window, tap the down arrow beside Apply to, and choose an application range from This folder only, This folder, subfolders and files, This folder and subfolders, This folder and files, Subfolder and files only, Subfolders only and Files only.
