What We Talk When We Talk About Smartphone Processors

By Achilles Hill | Last Updated

When we are going to buy a smartphone, the first thing to take care of is performance. The processor is one of the key factors that determine whether a phone is good or bad but can be easily ignored by consumers as well. However, what we talk when we talk about smartphone processors?

What is Processor?

In simple terms, the processor to a smartphone is equal to the brain to human. Owing to the smartphone is small than other devices, it requires highly integrated. As a result, smartphone processors always come in the form of SoC which also called System-on-a-Chip. SoC encapsulates multiple types of processor such as CPU, and GPU, LTE modem, memory, etc. At present, 90% processors use ARM framework.

Smartphone Processor Cores

The number of cores means the processor can simultaneously handle how many tasks include high- resolution videos and graphic-heavy games. Up to now, smartphones processor cores include deca-core, octa-core, quad-core, dual-core, and single core. The deca-core is the latest high-end processor; nevertheless, this technology is not mature enough that smartphones with deca-core all are poor performances. On the contrary, octa-core is the most popular by manufacturers and consumers.

Here comes a question, the more cores, the better? Not exactly. The more cores, the more power your smartphone will consume. Moreover, fewer cores may have a better architecture which would have a better processing speed.

Maximum CPU Clock

Here's a pitfall, it's not that the higher the frequency, the better. In theory, smartphone can run faster with higher frequency. However, in fact, the smartphone will get heated-up during usage if the frequency too high. We should consider about cache as well to assess its performance.

Smartphone Processor Brands

When you talk about the processors, you will find there are so many factors that make it hard to figure out which is the best one. You can refer to five processor brands in the following table to see what differences between them. Apple, Samsung, and Huawei use chipset that developed by themselves. The chipset of Qualcomm and MediaTek are the most used in Android phones.
