How to Fix Google Chrome using Too Much CPU

As one of the most popular browsers, Google Chrome has a good user interface and excellent performance. But users sometimes have problems with Google Chrome using too much CPU, which causes screen or mouse lag, a quickly draining battery, or other troubles. Way 1. Close unnecessary tabs and background processes

When there are too many browser tabs, Chrome is likely to occupy more CPU. So it's necessary to close unnecessary tabs and only use a few you need.

Background processes are also a great factor that occupies too much CPU. Chrome has a built-in task manager for you to manage CPU and memory usage. Here are the steps to close unnecessary processes with Chrome Task Manager.

Step 1. Click the three dots menu icon in the upper right corner of Google's browser.

Step 2. Choose "More tools" and then click "Task Manager".

Step 3. Choose a process and then click End process.

Way 2. Disable or delete some extensions

Running too many plug-ins or extensions will result in high CPU usage. So we need to disable unnecessary extensions. Additionally, poorly designed extensions or even malicious extensions would cause a high CPU usage or even corrupted Chrome. So, when Google Chrome uses too much CPU, you should check extensions carefully and delete unsafe extensions.

It's kind of easy to delete or disable extensions. Copy and paste chrome://extensions/ on the search bar of Chrome to see all extensions. Click the slider in the lower right corner to disable extensions. Click the "Remove" button to delete extensions.

Way 3. Regularly check for Chrome updates

Step 1. Going to the interface of "About Chrome". You can enter it by clicking on there dots menu icon, choosing Help and then selecting About Google Chrome. Or you can type chrome://settings/help on the search bar of Google to enter the interface of "About Chrome".

Step 2. Check for updates. If there are any updates, click it to update and wait until your computer downloads the latest Chrome version. Sometimes, you may face an error while checking for updates. Click on Learn more and follow the steps to fix the error.

Way 4. Clear browsing data on Chrome

Step 1. To enter the interface of "Clear browsing data", follow the given route: 3-dots menu icon > More tools > Clear browsing data. Or copy and paste chrome://settings/clearBrowserData in the search box of Chrome browser.

Step 2. Choose the Time range and data types to delete browsing data as you like.

It is recommended to clear all the data on the "Basic" section. On the "Advanced" section, be cautious to delete the "Passwords and other sign-in data" and "Download history". Deleting these two types of data will cause you to have to re-enter your password and lose downloaded files.

Way 6. Reinstall Google Chrome

Step 1. Uninstall Chrome on the computer. Enter the "Windows Settings" and choose "Apps". Search Chrome on the search bar, and click the result to choose "Uninstall".
