Master controls introduction

Toshiba TC358790XBG :

This controller is developed by Toshiba and Maevell, which is based on Maevell 88SS9187. TC358790XBG supports eight channel flash memory, each channel support 4CE units. It also supports the Toggle 2.0 flash interface but does not have cache.

Toshiba TC58NC1010GSB (Phison S11) :

TC58NC1010GSB was customized by Toshiba for phison PS3111-S11. The following is some information from Phison's official website.

Silicon Motion SM2246XT :

SM2246XT 's single-chip is with no DRAM design, which effectively reduces its BOM costs. This design also shows that it is born for low-cost products. At the same time, SM2246XT 's power consumption is very low, which is good for SSD batteries.

Silicon Motion SM2259 :

Matching controller SM2259 's Intel 545s has a prominent performance in the above SSDs. Compared to the SM2246XT which has its tail XT, this main master with no cut in performance. Using Silicon Motion 's patented NANDXtend™ error correction code (ECC) , SM2259 provides comprehensive data protection and enhances the durability and retention of 3D NAND. It is with good end-to-end data path protection to ensure data integrity and reliability. SM2259 also provides advanced DIRECT-TO-TLC and SLC Caching algorithms that enable TLC NAND to achieve the ideal stability performance.

Test environment

Motherboard: Asus Prime A320M-A

Processor: AMD Ryzen 3 2200 with Radeon Vega Graphics (x64-based Processor)

Installed memory (RAM): 8.00GB (Crucial DDR4 2400MHz)

Main hard disk: Toshiba HDWD110 (1TB, 7200 RPM)

Operating system: Windows 10 Enterprise 64-bit (DirectX 12)

4K alignment& AHCI& TRIM: On

Test data (Tested by AS SSD Benchmark)

Random reading and writing test :

With Marvell 88SS9187's excellent performance foundation, TC358790XBG ranks the second in the four SSD controllers. Marvell 88SS9187 was favored by many manufacturers when it was first launched, which was used to a series of flagship SSD products by many SSD manufacturers. It is worth mentioning that this master has high openness so that the major manufacturers are free to modify its price, performance, power consumption and functionality. While 88SS9187 has a good performance, it is important to note that the modified TC358790XBG performance decreases significantly after more than half of storage space is used.

Toshiba TC58NC1010GSB (Phison S11) :

Random Reading and writing test :

The custom Phison S11 performs well on small scale data. But switch to large scale data, the reading and writing (especially writing) performance decreases significantly. At the same time, this main control simulates some TLC into SLC to improve the speed of read and write. These TLC is known as SLC cache, the overall speed of the SSD will decrease significantly when SLC cache is exhausted.

Silicon Motion SM2246XT :

Sequential reading and writing speed :

sandisk 1g sequential

sandisk 10g sequential

Random reading and writing test :

sandisk 1g random

sandisk 10g random

SM2246XT 's XT tail indicates that this is a low-matching version SSD controller. From the test data, we can get its unbearable performance disadvantage. Particularly , 4K Read and write performance is worrying. Because our daily using mainly relies on SSD 4K read and write performance, the disavantage of this controller is that it will let users feel the computer working terribly slow. There is no wonder that some users rate the SSD which assembled with this controller as a large removable disk.

Silicon Motion SM2259 :

Random reading and writing test :

SM2259 has the best performmance among the four master controls. It's data is significant and stable, which indicates that the master has a high performance level. At the same time, it supports 256 - bit encryption, which delivers better encryption performance for SSDs and a greater user experience for customers.

Review summary for 4 main controls

Silicon Motion SM2259 (★★★★)

On balance, Silicon Motion SM2259 is an excellent controller with no performance short board. Its encryption function, stable and considerable transmission data makes users enjoy better accelerated experience. It is recommended.

Toshiba TC358790XBG (★★★)

Based on Marvell 's excellent architectural design, 88SS9187 has been an era's high-match controller . If there is no significantly speed decline after using a half of space, Toshiba TC358790XBG will be an excellent one.

Toshiba TC58NC1010 (★★)

TC58NC1010 does not have some dazzling data. With the help of SLC Cache, SSD has excellent test data on small scale data. However, when it come to large scale data transmission, the controller's flaw exposed. With the SLC Cache exhausted, the transmission speed showed a free-fall decline.

Silicon Motion SM2246XT (★)

Silicon Motion SM2246XT is the worst of the four, it's 4K reading and writing speed is the lowest. A lot of data is at the bottom of the performance test. Power-saving may be one of its few advantages. Many users found that the SSDs which use SM2246XT, some performance data is lower than some removable disks.

So we can know that the quality from high to low is Silicon Motion SM2259(★★★★), Toshiba TC358790XBG(★★★), Toshiba TC58NC1010(★★) and Silicon Motion SM2246XT(★). Thank you for your reading.

Appendix

Controllers with different adjustments

Kingston A400 and Toshiba TR200 used the same master control. In the appendix part we added Kingston A400 test data to explore the adjustment capacity of different manufacturers.

Sequential reading and writing speed :

kingston 1g sequential

kingston 10g sequential

Random reading and writing test :

kingston 1g random

kingston 10g random

Whether in sequential or random reading, Toshiba TR200 has higher performance than Kingston A400. But Toshiba TR200 also shows a sharp decline in write performance when dealing with large-scale data. At the same time, Kingston A400 seems to have done more on write performance, it maintains good write performance.

From this we can find that even for the same controller, through the different manufacturers' adjustment, it will have different performances. Toshiba TR200 is occupied at read speed, but the writing speed is lower and instability. Kingston A400 puts more energy into the write performance assurance. Taken together, Kingston A400 would be a better option than Toshiba TR200.
