Reset Windows 10 Local Admin Password without USB/Disk

What can you do with USB device?

Way 2: Boot Windows 10 in safe mode and reset local admin password

For example, you can run command prompt, computer management, control panel with Administrator, and then reset windows 10 local admin password.

1. Click Power > Restart on locked Windows 10 login screen and hold on Shift key at the same time.

2. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings. Click Restart and press F4/F5/F6 to Enable Safe Mode, then you will be able to enter Windows 10 safe mode with default administrator.

Way 3: Reset Windows 10 local admin password with installation disc

If you have Windows 10 install CD in hand, it would not only help you remove forgotten Windows 10 password by system reinstallation, but also reset local administrator password with command prompt on locked Windows 10 computer in 5 steps without any data loss.

5 Steps to reset Windows 10 forgotten admin password with installation disc

Step 1: Boot Windows 10 from install CD and run Command Prompt.

Just plug Windows install CD into your Windows 10 computer and start computer from CD. If it cannot starts from CD, please check whether UEFI and Secure Boot have been disabled in BIOS Setup or CD-ROM has been set as the first boot device.

When computer successfully starts from install CD and you see above screen, press Shift + F10 to open Command Prompt (cmd.exe) on Windows Setup screen.

Step 2: Replace Utility Manager with Command Prompt.

In order to restore Utility Manager (utilman.exe) later after Windows 10 local admin password reset, now please make a copy of it and then exchange the positions of utilman.exe and cmd.exe. So that you can reset forgotten admin password with net user command then on locked computer.

Enter following command in Command Prompt to copy or move utilman.exe and replace the original location of utilman.exe with cmd.exe. (D:\ is system disk)

move d:\windows\system32\utilman.exe d:\
copy d:\windows\system32\cmd.exe d:\windows\system32\utilman.exe

Step 3: Remove install disc and restart Windows 10 computer.

Type command "wpeutil reboot" and press Enter in Command Prompt window and exit install CD from computer. Then computer would restart and go to Windows 10 login screen.

Step 4: Reset Windows 10 local admin password with command prompt.

On lower right corner of Windows 10 login screen, click the icon of Ease of access and program utilman.exe would run on locked screen. Actually it is Command Prompt running now. So we can reset Windows 10 admin password with net user command below.

Now in the Utility Manager (utiliman.exe) Window, as long as you input command like "net user <username> <userpassword>" and press Enter, you could reset a new password for any user accounts.

For example, in order to reset password "abc" for administrator "isunshare", now we type command "net user isunshare abc" and press Enter.

Tips: Besides password reset, you can also create new administrator for Windows 10 with command prompt.

net user <username> <userpassword> /add
net localgroup administrators <username> /add

Step 5: Restart Windows 10 from install CD and restore Utility Manager.

After Windows 10 admin password reset with command prompt, it is necessary to restart Windows 10 again from install CD and restore utilman.exe with command, in purpose of restoring system settings you have changed before Windows 10 password reset.

1. Close utilman.exe window and insert install CD again into locked computer. Then restart computer from CD.
2. Press Shift + F10 to open Command Prompt again after computer successfully restarts. And restore utilman.exe with following command.

move d:\utilman.exe d:\windows\system32\utilman.exe

3. Close Command Prompt and exit the Windows 10 install CD.

Now try to boot your computer from hard drive. If nothing is wrong, you could sign in Windows 10 computer now with password-forgotten administrator, new administrator or enabled built-in administrator.
