Guide for Samsung SSD Optimization in Windows 10/8/7

By Michael | Last Updated

SSD optimization can not only make the SSD run in its best but also help to maintain its outstanding performance, which is extremely useful when you migrate the Windows OS from HHD to SSD in order to speed up your slow computer or upgrade the old PC. In this post, we will take the popular Samsung SSD as an example to show you how to optimize SSD in Windows and here is the detailed guide for Samsung SSD optimization in Windows 10/8/7.

  1. 1. Enable TRIM
  2. 2. Use SSD Optimization Tool
  3. 3. Leave Enough Free Space
  4. 4. Turn off Windows Indexing
  5. 5. Update the SSD Firmware

1. Enable TRIM

The TRIM command enables the Windows OS to inform the SSD which blocks of data are no longer needed and can be wiped. It can improve the SSD's write speed and extend the lifespan of the SSD. To check whether TRIM is running in your Windows computer and enable TRIM if it is off, you can follow the steps below.

Step 1: Run Command Prompt as an administrator.

  • In Windows 10/8: Press Win+X and then choose Command Prompt (Admin) in the quick access menu.
  • In Windows 7: Search Command Prompt in the start menu, right-click it and select Run as an administrator.

Step 2: In the open CMD, input fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify and hit Enter to execute the command. The CMD will show you DisableDeleteNotify=0 when TRIM is enabled. Or you will get DisableDeleteNotify=1 if TRIM is disabled.

To enable TRIM, you can execute the command fsutil behavior set DisableDeleteNotify 0 in CMD.

2. Use SSD Optimization Tool

Most of the SSD manufacturers develop the specialized optimization tools for their SSDs, so does Samsung. Samsung Magician is such a tool that can monitor the drive health of SSD, customize the SSD and also maximize the SSD performance. It supports Samsung SSD models like 970 Pro as well as 860 EVO and is available on its official website. After installing Samsung Magician in your Windows computer, you can improve the SSD performance with the Performance Optimization function.

3. Leave Enough Free Space

Sufficient free space plays an important role in keeping the SSD running faster. To get the best performance from the SSD, it's recommended to leave about 25% of the disk free space of the SSD, which means that you need to free up disk space regularly. You can uninstall the unneeded programs, move the big files to another place and so on. But it worth saying that cleaning up the disk is always the most powerful way to release disk space in some degree. To thoroughly clean up the Samsung SSD installed with Windows 10/8/7, you can use iSunshare System Genius which can scan the Windows OS for junk files as well as invalid registry entries and remove the useless found items with the simple 3 steps here.

Step 1: Get iSunshare System Genius in your Windows computer.

4. Turn off Windows Indexing

The indexing function helps to quickly search and access files in Windows, which works well on the hard drive. But for SSD, Windows indexing doesn't help a lot and might influence the SSD performance. So, it suggested to turn off indexing in Windows.

Step 1: Access Computer in Windows 8/7 or go to This PC in Windows 10.

Step 2: Locate to the SSD and right-click it. Then select Properties in the context menu.

Step 3: Under General tab of Properties window, uncheck Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties.

5. Update the SSD Firmware

SSD firmware is the program that is embedded in the SSD, which instructs the SSD to work with other computer software. It is vital for running the SSD smoothly and effectively. And compared with regular software, it's a bit more troublesome to update the SSD firmware. Luckily, different brands of SSD corporations are trying their best to make that easy. For Samsung SSD, you can update the firmware in Samsung Magician that you can download from Samsung official website conveniently.
