How to Measure CPU Power Consumption

By Sophia | Last Updated

Do you know how to calculate the power consumption of the CPU? You are likely to know the way to measure it through applications. Except for applications, we can also check the power consumption through official websites and online tools. In this post, we will walk you through these ways to measure the power consumption of the CPU.

Method 1: Check TDP through the computer manufacturer websites

Most computer manufactures list basic information about their hardware on the websites, including functions and specifications. It provides convenience to search for power consumption on official websites. Therefore, when we know the model of our CPU, we can go directly to the CPU manufacturer's official website for its TDP.

For example, if we want to know the TDP of "AMD Ryzen 5 5600x", we can search it on the AMD website. Choose "Ryzen™ 5 5600x Desktop Processors" on the search result. Click on Specifications and find that its TDP is 65W.

Method 2: Measure power consumption via PSU calculator tools

There are many power supply calculators available for measuring. Among them, we recommend OuterVision® Power Supply and CoolerMaster® Power Supply Calculator.

OuterVision Power Supply Calculator is an accurate power consumption calculator and is trusted by lots of people. CoolerMaster Power Supply Calculator is designed to help you select a suitable power supply unit for your computer. They are designed to measure the power consumption of the whole computer, but they can show the power consumption of specific hardware. Therefore, we can use them to measure the power consumption of the CPU easily.

For instance, we can know the power consumption of "AMD Ryzen 5 5600x" via CoolerMaster's power supply calculator. After choosing the brand and model, the calculator shows the recommended PSU wattage is 65 Watts.

Method 3: Check real-time power consumption via applications

Making use of applications is a simple and quick way to calculate the power consumption of the CPU. There are a lot of applications available for use. Among them, we recommend Open Hardware Monitor, HWMonitor, and HWiNFO.

Open Hardware Monitor is free and open-source software. It can display computer's temperature, fan speed, power consumption, and more information. Check how to know the power consumption of CPU via Open Hardware Monitor in the way below. Download it on the official website first. Open it and find the CPU section. Then find the "Powers" section, the data of the CPU Package is the power consumption we find.

The interface of HWMonitor is similar to Open Hardware Monitor. Besides, the power consumption of the CPU can also be checked by similar steps. Open HWMonitor, find the "CPU name" and then see the Package under the "Powers" section.

HWiNFO has a more detailed and comprehensive detection of the main components of computer hardware. It is especially suitable for people who need to observe the data of computer hardware. Through HWINFO, we can both know the TDP and real-time power consumption of the CPU. The TDP is shown on the "System Summary" module.

The real-time power consumption of the CPU can be found on the "Sensors" module. Open HWINFO, and click "Sensors". Then find CPU Package Power under the CPU section. The data on the "CPU Package Power" is the power consumption of the CPU in real time.
