What is the Use of Pagefile.sys?

Pagefile.sys is a page file that created in the process of Windows system installation, also called virtual memory. The size of pagefile.sys is determined by the minimum value of virtual memory. Once you open many large programs, you may run out of system memory. To solve this problem, Windows sets part of hard disk space as virtual memory to prevent your PC from breaking down.

How to Show Pagefile.sys Windows 10

By default, pagefile.sys is hidden and located at the root of drive C.

Step 1: Hit Windows + E to open File Explorer window.

Step 2: Under View tab, click on Options.

Step 3: In the Folder Options window, uncheck the box front Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) and click Show hidden files, folders, and drives.

Step 4: Open drive C, you may see pagefile.sys as the image below.

How to Relocate Pagefile.sys to Another Drive Windows 10

For Pagefile.sys file taking up a lot of space, we need to relocate or move it to another volume.

Step 1: Open Control Panel then click the down arrow next to View by than select Small icons.

Step 2: Click on Advanced system settings in the left sidebar.

Step 3: When the System Properties window pops up, click on "Advanced" tab. Locate to Performance section then click on Settings.

Step 4: Under Advanced tab, click on Change button.

Step 5: Untick the checkbox of Automatically manage paging file size for all drives. Select another drive that you want to move to then check Custom size, input the initial size and maximum size that you want to set. Tap on Set to apply all changes.

How to Delete Pagefile.sys to Free up C Volume

Repeat Steps one to four in Part 3 then uncheck Automatically manage paging file size for all drives in the Virtual Memory window. Select No paging file and click on Set. Restart your PC, and you will find the pagefile.sys file is deleted from C volume.
