How to Clear Virtual Memory Page File on Windows 8 Computer

Way 1: Clear virtual memory page file in Local Group Policy Editor.

Step 1: Open Local Group Policy Editor.

Open Run dialog box with the composite key of WIN key+R, type gpedit.msc in the empty box and click OK to open the editor.

Step 2: Find Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefile in the Editor.

Computer Configuration→Windows Settings→Security Settings→Local Policies→Security Options→Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefile

Step 3: Enter the properties of Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefile.

Right-click the option and choose Properties in the context menu.

Step 4: Enable the option.

Select Enabled in Local Security Setting and tap OK.

Way 2: Clear virtual memory page file in Registry Editor.

Step 1: Enable Registry Editor.

Open Run window, input regedit in the empty box and tap OK to enable it.

Step 2: Allow Registry Editor to make changes to the computer.

When the User Account Control window turns up, select Yes to allow the editor to make changes to this computer.

Step 3: Locate ClearPageFileAtShutdown in the editor.

You can find it according to the following process.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHING→SYSTEM→CurrentControlSet→Control→Session Manager→Memory Management→ClearPageFileAtShutdown

Step 4: Set the DWORD value as 1.

Double click ClearPageFileAtShutdown. Then, as the window of Edit DWORD (32-bit) Value appears, change the value data as 1 and click OK to complete the setting.

Step 5: Restart the computer.

On the desktop, use the composite key of Alt+F4 to open Shut Down Windows, select Restart in it and tap OK to reboot the computer. After restarting, the setting takes effect and the virtual memory is cleared without problem.
